Given that well over half of the 2.1m new jobs created in the last few years have gone to 1.1m immigrants, the Government is thinking of putting in place new rules that would create a sort of an entry barrier for low skilled workers like hotel and farm workers wanting to come here.


More IT Workers

What they realize is that there is a greater demand for more highly skilled immigrants from abroad like doctors, accountants and IT workers. Indeed, they are going to introduce a  new scheme by changing the way the Highly Skilled Migrant Programme is created, to make it even more hassle-free for IT workers from abroad to come to the UK to work.

The complete collapse of the Doha Round of the World Trade Agreement talks where the UK and other EU Governments showed their willingness to allow any IT Contractor, or any IT worker provided by a Contractual Service Provider from anywhere in the world, to work here for 6 months of any year, has prompted them to look at other avenues.

Any 'managers of the future' would have been allowed to come here for a year at the start of their careers. What graduates could not be considered 'managers of the future'.


Skills Shortages?

Now that we are again hearing talk of skills shortages, I am sure we will be hearing the familiar talk about why we need more IT workers in the UK. Like last time, it may be put in place just as the next downturn is starting to kick in.

Somehow, IT Contractors always seem to be at the farthest end when the Government gets down to making plans for the IT industry.

Thank to the Professional Contractors Group, they are not sidelining us to the extent that they would like to.
