Major IT skills shortages driving IT Contractor rates up

    Skills Shortage

According to an annual survey by Robert Walters, one of the biggest existing IT agencies, both salaries and contractor rates are being driven northwards because of a gaping skills shortage in IT. The main shortages being felt are in the SAP, Oracle and Microsoft .Net.

There seems to be no abatement in the rates rises despite the credit crunch according to the survey except in the banking sector which is the only sector to be hit by the credit crunch so far.

A slowdown is also being experienced in the public sector as well but all for different reasons, i.e. a slowdown in spending on large projects which are now coming to an end.

    Skills

The survey revealed there is a drastic shortage of Project Managers and Technical Support workers. Also, DBAs, Systems Architects and Senior Testers were in big shortage as well.

    No Bite

As for now, the credit crunch has not bitten much except in the banking sector.

Is this credit crunch a damp squib, or just waiting to strike with violent force at the economy and the IT Contracting market?
